By Abdul Hannan Faisal Tago (From his memory “Climbing The Ladder of Success”) Series (5) MUSLIMS in the Philippines owe a great deal to the initiative of late Senator Dr. Ahmad Domocao Alonto, one of the founding members of the Makkah-based Muslim World League for the launch of the scholarship scheme. The groundwork for this project was laid at his meeting with the late Egyptian President, Gamal Abdel Nasser, in Bandung, Indonesia at the Bandung Conference for Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in 1955, according to Alaoddin Datudacula Lucman, a Shariah graduate from Al-Azhar University. He said that the historic meeting had awakened the Muslim world to the plight of the Muslims in the Philippines. Even the Egyptians were surprised to learn that there were Muslims in the Philippines, dubbed the only Christian nation in Asia. |

Series No (4) EVEN before the discovery of oil in the Gulf States, acquiring Islamic knowledge and learning Arabic had always been a priority for the Muslim community in the Philippines, especially for those from Mindanao. Their yearning for knowledge in this direction makes sense, since the Gulf States have always remained the top destination for a hundred thousand Filipinos seeking jobs abroad. A second factor is that a Muslim in the Philippines ideologically tends to learn more about his religion, for which knowledge of Arabic is essential. The Sultanate system inherited by their ancestors also encouraged them to study the Islamic way of life taught and prescribed in the Holy Qur’an, the ultimate source of guidance both for this world and the Hereafter. It is against this background that Egypt had carved out a niche for itself in the Muslim hearts. It is where civilization flourished for over 3,000 years, longer than many other civilizations in the world history. Egypt also ranked among the most influential Arab states, where you can learn about Islam and yet remain modern and moderate within the Islamic fold. |

By Abdul Hannan Faisal Tago Series No (3) STUDYING abroad is a dream for any student who seeks good education, besides widening his intellectual horizon. Such a dream is possible in the case of students who hail from a rich family or those who are in positions. But a majority of them are not born with a silver spoon in their mouth. My financial status in the community in Lanao Del Sur in Mindanao was much worse than those from the other parts of the Philippines. This was because of the prolonged political instability in the region that has impacted not only the economic condition but also the educational standard. |
