By Abdul Hannan Faisal Tago (From his memory “Climbing The Ladder of Success”) Series (6) My long-term goal, however, was to enter the field of mass communications. The reason was that there was not a single Muslim Filipino who had studied journalism abroad. The reason probably was that either they could not afford it or maybe it was due to the lack of opportunity in our province. As such, I aspired to become one of few Moro journalists graduated from Middle East esteem university. One of the triggers that motivated to become a journalist was the political situation in the Philippines where Muslims were at Manila’s mercy for getting media coverage. In fact, an incident that happened in the case of a group of Ulama led by late Sheikh Ahmad Bashir, during a visit to the Malacanang Palace at the time of Marcos in 1984 marked a turning point in my life. It prompted me to think seriously of taking up journalism as a career, so that I could articulate the Muslim point of view through the press. |

Join us in celebrating our 35th Anniversary on Tuesday
Dear Valued Readers, Greetings: On behalf of Arab News Editor in Chief, Dr. Khaled Almaeena, it gives me pleasure to inform you that Arab News, the first English language daily newspaper in Saudi Arabia, will celebrate its 35th anniversary this coming Tuesday, April 20th, 2010. There will be a supplement to mark the event on the same day covering a wide spectrum of citizens and expatriates including expatriates contribution to the modern Kingdom developments. Thanks to Almighty Allah, since its establishment, the newspaper has been achieving continued success, which made it a well-known “green newspaper” in the Arab Gulf region and other parts of the world. It has always been the first to provide a distinguished and an outstanding coverage of major events since the war in Lebanon, the first Gulf War, the liberation of Kuwait...etc. It has become a reliable source of news for the international news agencies and other media organizations. Arab News also focuses on local issues including: the development of the Saudi society, the Saudi economy, human rights topics, consumer protection and others. This made it worthy of the name: “The Green Truth” given to it by a number of Saudi and foreign readers. The staff of the newspaper have been the focus of attention for T.V space channels and international news networks who host them for their knowledgeable commentaries, objective coverage and deep analysis of local and international news. |

Abdul Hannan Faisal Tago RIYADH – As in democratic countries, the Philippines elections, too, create a rift among the people along the political divide, which also spills over into the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) ranks. With the start of absentee voting process outside the country last Saturday, debates among the supporters of the presidential candidates on various social networking websites have triggered a heated debate, with some betraying their racial prejudice, while others extend blind support to their candidates. In Facebook, many supporters simply cut and paste what a candidate says against his rival aspirant, including harsh comments and wild accusations by politicians that also find echo in the Philippine media. By doing so, some of those supporters have blindly cast in their lot with politicians who are apparently interested in their own political agenda back home. |
